This course offers state-of-the-art knowledge and information on vibration control methods and building framing schemes. With construction of higher-rise buildings and longer-span structures, various problems need to be solved relevant to vibration and deformation. As the inherent damping or stabilizing ability of buildings and structural elements is not necessarily sufficient, particular methods and techniques for suppressing or minimizing vibrations and deformations of building frames and elements using auxiliary devices are necessary to assure the required performance. This course consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the inherent dynamic characteristics of buildings and structures and evaluation techniques, and various types of vibration control methodologies. The second part focuses on various methods for evaluating the effectiveness of passive control dampers and building framing schemes. The characteristics of four main types of dampers are explained. Design and analytical methods for three types of framing systems having distinct architectural features, damper connecting schemes, as well as control efficiencies are also explained. |
